Re-certification
Too long didn't read (TLDR)
Previously certified officer, separated 2 or more years. Both tiers use the Application for Certification (Parts 1, 2 & 3). Training required differs by length of separation.

See the Certification Process overview for a decision guide.
The two tiers
| Separation | Training required |
|---|---|
| 2–5 years | Skills update + 32 hours of law classes |
| More than 5 years | 200-hour refresher academy |
Both tiers use the full Application for Certification — Parts 1, 2, and 3.
Process (same for both tiers)
- Applicant requests a portal account if they don't already have one — approval takes 12–24 hours; see portal getting started guide
- Applicant submits Parts 1 & 2 through the portal — personal information, background disclosures, and acknowledgments
- POC completes Part 3 — agency information and your certification of the applicant's eligibility
- Submit to Standards & Training — submit only when all three parts are complete
- Coordinate training — after application approval:
- Tier 1 (2–5 years): enroll in skills update + 32 hours of law classes
- Tier 2 (5+ years): enroll in the 200-hour refresher academy
Application must be approved before training begins
For both tiers, do not enroll the officer in any training program until Standards & Training approves the application.
Your responsibilities as POC
- Direct the applicant to request a portal account if needed
- Complete Part 3 after the applicant submits Parts 1 & 2
- Submit the full application to Standards & Training
- Coordinate training enrollment after approval
Key reminders
- Separation is measured from the officer's last date of employment in a certified law enforcement capacity
- If separated less than 2 years, use Transfer / Rehire instead
- Training must be completed after approval, not before
